The news broke last night. George Lucas, like Darth Vader, is on the road to redemption as he has just sold Lucasfilm to Disney for over $4bn! And Disney, never a studio not to play around with their loyal customer base, nor miss a opportunity to capitalise on a franchise, is planning to release Star Wars: Episode VII in 2015!

To be honest, when I first read this, I didn’t believe it. It had to a joke, but it isn’t. It’s true and Star Wars is coming back to our screens, ten years after its last outing, Episode III and 32 years after Return Of The Jedi, the film which this would be a direct sequel to. Will we see the original cast return? Is this almost too good to be true? Can we get Carrie Fisher some acting lessons? Will George Lucas be allowed to ruin anymore Star Wars films?

Well, he would be onboard as a creative consultant, but this could leave the door wide open for a new team to breathe life in to a franchise which could be so much for that it is. The format of Star Wars is not dissimilar to a comic book franchise and it can, in theory, go on forever, but with plans for Episode VII to begin a new trilogy, this could be A New Hope for the franchise, which to me, has lost something.

The first thing that I would like to see though, is a restoration of the Original Trilogy as it was ORIGINALLY seen, before Lucas meddled with them. This is certainly some of the most important movie news in years and my hope is that Disney may be able to do something here, maybe restore some credibility to the franchise, which started so well in 1977 and ended up with midichlorians!

Give George an office in the back…
