DIRECTOR: Phil Lord & Christopher Miller

Based on the 1980’s TV series on the same name, 21 Jump Street is the best comedy which I have seen in years. The laughs started right from the get go as we meet our pair of police officers, who end up riding bikes with silly sirens rather than taking part in the high-octane pursuits which they had imagined.

The pairing of Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum is contrived and in many ways unconvincing but it’s endearing in equal measure. It might not make sense that a Geek and a Jock would become like brothers pretty much overnight as they learn to compete each other and make a good team, but the fact that the two leads are funny and true to this conceit, helps to create and sustain this fantasy.

The comedy is both subtle and outrageous, as the pair wade through the self referencing screenplay, with some brilliant cameos and assaults on the genre’s stereotypes which are played almost straight, the key to any great comedy. The plot is simple but sustained by a hilarious, tight and well paced script and the spot on performances of the two stars, Hill and the surprisingly good Tatum, an actor who may well have found his medium, but will know doubt be cast as meat-head hunks again and again.

But comedy is defiantly his forte and one which he should pursue in the future. There is a totally left field cameo in this film and I won’t say any more about it, except that even tough it was a nice surprise, it did distract me from the action and our leads for the time that it was happening and for that, I would have said that I would have prefered its absence but in my heart, it was great!

Overall, one of the best mainstream comedies which I have seen in a long time and I would highly recommend it. This was not just a funny film, it was  a well scripted, acted and creatively directed affair. About time I  laughed so much that it hurt…
