DIRECTOR: Ridley Scott

Will we be adding this to our collection? NO

Based on the true story of Frank Lucas (Denzel Washington), Ridley Scott tells the story of a small-time gangster in Harlem, New York, who grew, using the model of the Italian Mafia, in to a high level narcotics supplier. Meanwhile, Richie Roberts (Russell Crowe) is the clean and hated detective who is assigned to bring him down.

This is not a taut thriller and never tries to be. This is a biopic and as such takes its time and methodically explains the story, attempts to realise their motivations and shine a light on Harlem of the late 1970’s. Ridley Scott can build worlds (Blade Runner (1982), create energetic masterpieces (Black Hawk Down (2001) and redefine genres (Alien (1979), but he can also miss the mark (Body Of Lies (2008) but this film is none of the above.

It’s a typical and straight forward biopic of an American Gangster. Interesting, insightful and well performed but it’s also unremarkable for anything besides its attention to detail.

For genre fans, this will be a good watch but for everyone else, I doubt that it will convert you.
