DIRECTOR: Judd Apatow

Will we be adding this to our collection? MAYBE

Judd Apatow’s comedy which propelled Steve Carell in to the mainstream before The (American) Office sealed the deal, takes a surprisingly mature look at the subject of a 40-year-old virgin. The title would suggest that he NEEDS to get laid, as did the trailers but when the movie gets into it, it is in fact Carell who is the most well-adjusted.

His sex mad mates, whilst getting plenty have troubled relationships, with one failing to get over his ex, another prolifically cheating on his long-term girlfriend until she finds that she’s pregnant and another ending up with weirdos! Well, supposedly but that’s all subjective.

But as with all Apatow comedies, the characters are well-rounded, quirky and offer support to the lead, without overshadowing him, as his quest to get laid becomes a warm-hearted love story in which sex is seen as part of a loving relationship rather than the be all and end all.

A pleasant surprise.
