Will we be adding this to our collection? NO

The first thing that struck me about this film had nothing to do with it at all. Made in 2005, this was same year as Batman Begins, in which Katie Holmes had played Rachel Dawes, as well as Heather Holloway in this, but with Aaron Eckhart playing Harvey Dent in the 2008 sequel The Dark Knight, boyfriend to Rachel who was now played by Maggie Gylinghal, we know who what it might have been like to see Katie play against him if she had reprised her role…

Anyway, Thank You For Smoking is a smug film, but witty to boot. It follows the exploits of pro smoking lobbyist, Nick Naylor (Eckhart) who prides himself on arguing and being the best at it. But that’s pretty much the point of the film. The film is about arguing and how clever it can be if done for the sake of it and not so much about smoking.

Smoking is just the topic, chosen to be as controversial as possible in order for us to both hate and revere our leading man in equal measure. This is cleverly written, seamlessly blending fact with fiction and crafting some witty characters along the way, with some stand out performances from the, at the time, fresh out of The West Wing, Rob Lowe, Robert Duval and the always reliable, Sam Elliott, as the dying Marlborough Man.

Funny, dark in its subject matter and well-played throughout. But it is VERY pleased with itself and not necessarily with justification.
