It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World, or at least that’s what it thinks it is! Is this a remake of the 1960’s classic comedy, well probably but was 2001 really the right year to revisit such a dated slapstick comedy style? Was the 1960’s for that matter? The Wacky Races formula has the Marmite effect, either you love it or you hate it, as it must set stupid characters doing stupid and implausible things in the name of comedy. Well, sorry, but rocket cars speeding across the desert with Whoopi Goldberg and Cuba Gooding Jr. stripping to his underwear in front of what appeared to be Wilma Flintstone and Betty Rubble, just doesn’t cut it.
The plot revolves around John Cleese’s LasVagas casino owner who hand picks a collection of gamblers to race for his and his friends entertainment around the U.S. for a jackpot of a $2,000,000. They travel by every form of transport imaginable and end up in the obligatory chase in the end. Maybe it’s fun if you like this sort of thing but for me, I just found it to be cringe-worthy and fail to understand why most of the cast would have signed up for such a cheap movie. Airplane! (1980), Zucker’s classic comedy, this is not.
