THIS WEEK IN nEoFILM ~ 23/1/15

Flash reviews the last week.

blue_thunderBLUE THUNDER 1983 10/10

Classic ‘R’ rated thriller, beginning the trend of ‘suped up’ vehicle thrillers. Knight Rider, Airwolf, Street Hawk and its very own spin-off, Blue Thunder TV series would follow and help define the era of 80’s television. But this slick thriller following the exploits of a prototype cross between a police helicopter and gunship had a lot to say about the ever encroaching surveillance culture of the 80’s, whilst disguised as action thriller.

runawayRUNAWAY 1984 6/10

Another Michael Chricton written and directed film of the 1980’s. This is the ‘near future’ and one where robots have become an everyday part of life. But in a similar vein to Chricton’s earlier and better known work, Westworld (1974), things go a little wrong. Decent enough for its time but the only thing that really works 30 years after is the potential for robots to take over our lives, especially the flying drone which bear striking resemblance to those which you can buy as toys nowadays.

finding_nemo_ver2_xlgFINDING NEMO 2003 6/10

Overrated but still a fun outing from Pixar. Colourful, interesting and filled with good ideas, the execution is a little too Disney for my taste and falls short of Pixar’s trade mark wit. There’s still plenty of great moments though.

Zzero_dark_thirty_ver4_xlgERO DARK THIRTY 2013 6/10

The gripping story of the hunt for Osama Bin Laden after the 9/11 terror attacks, which didn’t see his assassinated for another ten years. Though I should have said “the story of” because gripping is misplaced. This is another overrated procedural, though interesting, the characters, especially Jessica Chastain’s lead C.I.A. operative in charge of taking him down, are very cold and difficult to get behind and the finale in which a black ops team shot Bin Laden is overly long and actually too realistic. Again, interesting but quite boring to boot. That sums up the entire film really.

EXexodus_gods_and_kings_ver4_xlgODUS: GODS AND KINGS (2D) 2014 7/10

Ridley Scott’s muddled attempt to tackle The Ten commandments. Much better that it looks but has a confused tone and structure. Might be in need of a director’s cut?

three_hundred_rise_of_an_empire_xlg300: RISE OF AN EMPIRE (2D) 2014 8/10

The sequel to the excellent 300 (2006), this runs pretty much concurrent with the original but lacks the supernatural edge of that film. Still enjoyable, bombastic and visually stunning, it lacks the originality of the 300. Well worth a watch though.

alice_in_wonderland_xlgALICE IN WONDERLAND (2D) 2010 5/10

Tim Burton puts his spin on this classic tale and it looks like Tim Burton has done just that. It’s okay with some nice twists but nothing to write home about.

naked_gun_three_ver1 THE NAKED GUN 33 1/3: THE FINAL INSULT 1994 6/10

The Final Insult indeed. Well, not really. It’s much better that it needs to be for a third outing, with some good gags but obviously, third time of the gate, the series was flagging.
