These are my picks for the Top Seven Star Wars Lightsabre Duels. I will only be counting duels from from the first six theatrical movies.
A Number Seven…
A NEW HOPE
Obi Wan Vs. Darth Vader (Death Star)
The first real duel of the Saga and in many ways, one of the most poignant with Anakin effectively getting his revenge on his old master who right or wrong, left him for dead over 20 years prior.
REVENGE OF THE SITH
Yoda Vs. Darth Sidious (Courasant)
This was a little unexpected as I had never really thought of the Emperor as the physical type until this film. Good fun and it is a fight which has real stakes. Not a great ending though as Yoda give up but still…
THE PHANTOM MENACE
Qui-Gon & Obi Wan Vs. Darth Maul (Naboo)
After the Podrace, this is the best part of Episode I. The choreography is stunning and the fight is the first real fast paced duel of the Saga. The stakes are low though and as such it does feel a little wasted.
RETURN OF THE JEDI
Luke Vs. Vader (Death Star 2)
Luke rejecting the Darkside. Darth Vader’s redemption and the death of Palpatine. What is not to like.
ATTACK OF THE CLONES
Yoda Vs. Count Dooku (Geonosis)
Maybe not the best duel of the Saga, but the sheer shock value pushes this to top of the list. For younger fans reading this, imagine our surprise when Yoda, the frail 900 year old Jedi master leapt into action for the first time. Brilliant!
REVENGE OF THE SITH
Obi Wan Vs. Anakin (Darth Vader) (Mustafar)
Epic, great score and real stakes and audience anticipation. This was the moment that the prequels were building towards and though whilst not perfect, it was more than good enough.
THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK
Luke Vs. Vader (Bespin)
Concluding with one of Cinema’s greatest twists, our hero is maimed and damaged in more ways than one. Our villain is revealed as more human that we realised and the lightsabre action is not too bad either. This is a one of the most well judged set-ups ever committed to the big screen
